Fairchild is also the sister of Katie Van Waldenberg, a kind-hearted skater who befriends Jimmy and later becomes Chazz's love interest.

At the World Winter Games, Chazz and Jimmy perform their short program successfully, but Stranz and Fairchild sabotage them by replacing their music with a sexually explicit song, causing them to be disqualified. They are reinstated after a protest, but their coach quits in disgust. They then learn about the Iron Lotus, a forbidden move that involves one skater being launched into the air by the other and performing a triple axel while spinning. The move was attempted by a pair of skaters in the 1980s, who died when the male skater missed the catch and the female skater's head was severed by his skate blade.

Chazz and Jimmy decide to attempt the Iron Lotus in their free skate, despite the danger. During the performance, they execute the move perfectly, but Stranz and Fairchild attempt to sabotage them by throwing a skate blade onto the ice. Chazz slips on it but still catches Jimmy, and they land the move. Stranz and Fairchild are disqualified for their actions.
