What happens in Kung Fu Panda?

The film opens with a dream sequence in which Po, a clumsy and overweight panda, imagines himself as a great kung fu hero. He wakes up in his father Mr. Ping's noodle shop in the Valley of Peace. Mr. Ping, a goose, reveals that the secret ingredient in his noodle soup is nothing special, just the belief that it makes the soup special. Po is a fan of kung fu but has no skills.

At the Jade Palace, Master Shifu is training the Furious Five, consisting of Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Crane (David Cross). They are preparing for the selection of the Dragon Warrior, who will be chosen by the wise tortoise Master Oogway (Randall Duk Kim) to defend the valley against the escaped villain Tai Lung. Tai Lung, a snow leopard, was once Shifu's adopted son and student, but he turned evil when denied the Dragon Scroll.

The selection ceremony takes place. Po, desperate to see the event, arrives late on a firework-rigged chair that flies into the middle of the courtyard. He lands at the feet of Oogway, who points at him and declares him the Dragon Warrior. Everyone is shocked, including Shifu and the Five. Po is thrilled but completely unprepared.

Shifu tries to make Po quit by putting him through brutal training, but Po's stubbornness and enthusiasm keep him going. Meanwhile, Oogway warns Shifu that Tai Lung has escaped from prison. Oogway then ascends to the heavens in a shower of peach blossoms, passing his wisdom to Shifu.

Shifu realizes that he cannot change Po and instead tries to find a way to train him using Po's love of food. He uses dumplings as motivation, turning Po's gluttony into a training method. Po learns the fundamentals of kung fu in a montage, though he still lacks the refinement of the Five.

Tai Lung breaks out of Chorh-Gom Prison, defeating an army of rhinos and the Five's attempts to stop him. He arrives at the Jade Palace. Shifu tries to fight him but is easily overpowered. Po, carrying the Dragon Scroll, is sent to face Tai Lung. The scroll is revealed to be blank, and Po initially believes it means he is useless. But he recalls his father's words about the secret ingredient, realizing that the scroll's power comes from within. He tells Tai Lung that the scroll is blank, enraging him.

The final battle takes place on the bridge leading to the palace. Po uses his unconventional style, including his belly and his ability to use anything as a weapon, to outsmart Tai Lung. He eventually uses the Wuxi Finger Hold, a move he failed to learn earlier. He tricks Tai Lung into relaxing his finger, then releases the hold, sending Tai Lung flying into the sky. The battle is over.

Po returns to the Jade Palace, where the Furious Five now accept him as their leader. Shifu is proud. The film ends with Po and Mr. Ping sitting on the steps, eating noodles. Po asks his father about the secret ingredient, and Mr. Ping tells him that the secret is that there is no secret, just believing in yourself. Po smiles, content.
