During the championship fight against Zeus, Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) discovers that Atom's "shadow function" allows real-time mirroring of his own movements. He abandons voice commands and steps into the ring's control zone to fight Zeus directly through Atom, turning the bout into a de facto human versus machine match.

What happens in Real Steel?

Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman), a former boxer reduced to hustling low-level robot fights across the American Midwest, learns his ex-girlfriend has died and he must attend a custody hearing for their eleven-year-old son Max (Dakota Goyo). At the hearing, Charlie's wealthy aunt Debra (Hope Davis) and her husband Marvin (James Rebhorn) seek full custody. Charlie cuts a side deal with Marvin: he will sign over rights for one hundred thousand dollars, half now and half after he keeps Max for the summer while Debra and Marvin vacation in Italy.

Charlie drops Max off at the gym of Bailey Tallet (Evangeline Lilly), his childhood friend and the daughter of his old boxing trainer. Bailey runs the gym and maintains the robots. Charlie heads to a rural fair to fight his damaged robot Ambush against a bull — literally a steer — for a two-thousand-dollar purse. Ambush is destroyed. Desperate for money, Charlie breaks into a junkyard at night with Max tagging along. Max falls over a ledge and is caught by the arm of a buried Generation-2 sparring robot named Atom. Max insists they dig it out and haul it back to Bailey's gym.

Bailey identifies Atom as an obsolete sparring model with a rare "shadow function" designed to mimic a human trainer's movements for practice. Max becomes obsessed with Atom, cleaning and repairing it while Charlie chases a payday with a newly purchased former league robot, Noisy Boy. Charlie enters Noisy Boy in an underground bout at the Crash Palace, run by Finn (Anthony Mackie). Overconfident, Charlie tries to control Noisy Boy via voice commands against the brutal Midas. Noisy Boy is dismantled in the first round. Charlie owes Finn money and is beaten by Finn's enforcers.

Max, furious at Charlie's recklessness, reveals he has been training Atom using the shadow function and voice recognition. He enters Atom in a minor league fight at a county fair against the six-legged robot Metro. Atom wins by knockout after Max uses the shadow function to dodge a finishing blow. A video of the fight goes viral. Charlie, seeing money, books Atom into the World Robot Boxing league. They climb the ranks: Atom defeats Twin Cities, then the heavily armored Axelrod in a televised match where Charlie finally steps in to shadow-box Atom through the final round.

Promoter Ricky (Kevin Durand) offers a championship shot against Zeus, the undefeated champion designed by genius Tak Mashido (Karl Yune) and backed by icy billionaire Farra Lemkova (Olga Fonda). Zeus is faster, stronger, and controlled by a team of programmers. Charlie accepts. In the lead-up, Max is nearly kidnapped by Marvin's private investigator but escapes. Charlie realizes Marvin only wanted Max out of the way to secure the adoption. Charlie tears up the custody deal and commits to Max fully.

The championship fight at the WRB arena. Zeus dominates the first two rounds. Atom's voice-recognition antenna is damaged. In the corner, Charlie tells Max he will have to be Atom's eyes and ears. Max climbs onto the control platform and activates the shadow function. Charlie, in the ring, begins to box. Atom mirrors him perfectly. The crowd erupts. Charlie boxes the third and fourth rounds through Atom, landing blows no programmer could anticipate. Zeus's programmers panic. In the fifth round, Charlie takes a simulated beating as Zeus hammers Atom. The bell rings. The judges award the decision to Zeus on points.

The arena chants "Atom! Atom!" Farra Lemkova stares at the cheering crowd, unnerved. Tak Mashido offers a respectful nod. Charlie lifts Max onto his shoulders. Bailey pushes through the crowd to hug them both. Marvin watches from a luxury box, defeated. Charlie turns down a seven-figure rematch contract. He, Max, and Bailey walk out of the arena into the night, Atom's battered chassis loaded into their truck, a family finally whole.
